Nairobi Coffee Exchange Records Strong Opening Auction
Kenya's coffee market opened the 2026/2027 coffee season on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, with the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) recording approximately KSh 801 million in sales, reflecting continued demand for Kenyan coffee.
According to market reports, the auction traded 17,084 bags of coffee weighing approximately 1,056,615 kilograms. The total sales value reached US$6.20 million, with the average price standing at US$293 per 50-kilogram bag.
Premium Coffee Grades Attract Buyers
The auction demonstrated continued demand for quality Kenyan coffee, with premium grades attracting competitive prices.
The average prices recorded included:
- AA Grade: US$338 per 50-kilogram bag.
- AB Grade: US$325 per 50-kilogram bag.
- PB Grade: US$322 per 50-kilogram bag.
- C Grade: US$296 per 50-kilogram bag.
Among the standout lots, Nchoroiboro AA achieved approximately US$382 per 50-kilogram bag, while Kipsinende FCS AA fetched US$367.
These results highlight the importance of coffee quality, proper processing and careful post-harvest handling in Kenya's competitive coffee market.
What the Results Mean for Farmers
The opening auction provides an important indication of market demand as farmers, cooperatives, millers and marketing agents begin the new coffee year.
However, auction prices should not be confused with the final payments received by farmers. Actual earnings depend on factors including milling costs, marketing charges, statutory deductions and cooperative-specific arrangements.
Farmers and cooperatives can continue strengthening their market position by improving quality management, maintaining appropriate moisture levels and reducing post-harvest losses.
Trovancy's Perspective: Technology and Coffee Quality
At Trovancy Technologies, we recognise the importance of technology in strengthening agricultural value chains.
Digital coffee collection, accurate weighing, moisture monitoring, warehouse inventory management and transparent stock tracking can help cooperatives improve operational efficiency and maintain better records throughout the coffee journey.
As Kenya enters the 2026/2027 coffee season, combining quality production with reliable digital systems remains an important opportunity for farmers and cooperatives.
